(Anthony Savvides) – This weekend, from September 27-30, Foligno will be hosting the 14th annual “Primi d’Italia” (the first courses of Italy), a four-day celebration of Italian cuisine and delicacies. The streets of Foligno will be bustling with excitement as food lovers come from near and far for the event, featuring soups, gnocchi, pasta, rice, and many other . As the early autumnal atmosphere washes over Umbria, “Primi d’Italia” will once again explore new flavors, street food and the expertise of more than 100 gourmet chefs who remake simple pasta dishes into culinary masterpieces.
The theme of the 2012 edition is “La cucina di alta qualità low-cost” (the low-cost, high quality cuisine), meant to demonstrate how innovations can be incorporated into the cooking and dining experience in tough economic times. The event will launch on Thursday at 10:00, with the conference “Food: economic resource and a source of health” at the Palazzo Trinci.
“I Villaggi del Gusto” (the village of tastes) and other Special Events are the two major areas of the festival this year. The “Villaggi” will make up the Circuito Degustanzioni (Tastings Circuit), where people will be able to stroll through while surveying 15 menus including regional pastas, soups, typical Sardinian dishes and truffles, among other dishes.
Among the special events at the festival, the Trinci Palace will host “La Boutique della Pasta,” a market of pasta showcasing regional pasta shapes. San Giacomo Cloister will have the “Gusto in Libreria,” a collection of wine and culinary publications. At the Court of Candiotti Palace there will be a market of local food and wine, and “Odori & Sapori” (Smells & Flavors), an exhibition of spices and herbs, will be at Chiostro S. Giacomo.
“I Primi d’Italia Junior” is an event where children between 5-11 will play while learning about a healthy diet, noodle and dumpling preparation. The event for little chefs-in-the-making will take place in the Piazza della Repubblica on each of the four days.
The hours for “Primi d’Italia” are as follows: Thursday, September 27th and Friday, September 28th, from 16:00 to 23:00; Saturday, September 29th, from 10:00 to 23:00; and Sunday, September 30th, from 10:00 to 21:00.
