Story by Anthony Savvides
On October 4, Trevi (Italy) opened the annual “Ottobre Trevano” festival with “Convivium Terzieri” at the Tavern of Terzieri, a culinary competition. “Ottobre Trevano” is a celebration of Trevi’s arts and culinary culture that got off to an unofficial start earlier in the day with a screening of the 2003 film “Il Cibo degli Altri” (The Food of Others). In the eight days since the festival’s kick-off, there has been an array of events throughout Trevi, including “Idyllic Landscape,” a fine arts exhibition hosted by “Il Corimbo,” a cultural association, and the Community of Trevi, followed by a traditional Medieval feast in Centro Storico.
The “Ottobre Trevano” festival will, as its name implies, continue throughout the month, with events running through October 28. Today, October 13, beginning at 15:00, there will be games and other activities for children at Parco Villa Fabri, followed by Nutella and snacks at 16:00 in Piazza Garibaldi.
Stroll over to San Francesco Church at 17:30 for a concert of sixteenth and seventeenth century classical music, performed by organist Angelo Silvio Rosati. If you would rather spend the afternoon outdoors, there is a Medieval Merchant’s Fair in Parco Villa Fabbri from 16-24:00, and it will also be open on Sunday, October 14, from 9-24:00.
Also on Sunday, the Fourth National Archery Tournament will take place in Centro Storico beginning at 9:00. For a taste of local products, visit the “Gusta Trevi” (A Taste of Trevi), also in Centro Storico, from 9-20:00. Fabio Bussotti will play Marchitto in “De Pezzola al Cameriere di Borges” (From Pezzola to The Waiter from Borges) at Teatro Clitunno at 21:00.
Next week, on Thursday, October 18, you will have the chance to catch a screening of “Julie & Julia,” starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. The film will be shown at Teatro Clitunno at 17:30. On Saturday, October 20, children can enjoy “Il Dono più Prezioso” (The Most Precious Gift), presented at 17:30 at Teatro Clitunno by the OASI-Clown in Pediatrics Association. Later that evening, at 21:00, the “Monologo Avanti al Crocifisso” (The Monologue of the Crucifix) by Feliciano Prosperi will be adapted and directed by Paris Faffa at San Francesco Church at 21:00.
The following morning, on Sunday, the 48th annual “Sagra del Sedano Nero e della Salsiccia” (Festival of Black Celery and Sausage) will be held in Centro Storico beginning at 9:00. Later on in the afternoon, at 17:30, Mauro Presazzi will direct the Polyphonic Choir of the City of Trevi in a performance of “I Cantori di Cannaiola.” The performance will take place at the San Francesco Church. Following the choir, “Voi ch'ascoltate in rime sparse il suono” (You who hear scattered rhythm and sounds), a poem reading, will be held in the Piazza San Francesco at 19:00.
For the final week of “Ottobre Treviano,” there will be another film screening at Teatro Clitunno on Thursday, October 25, at 17:30; “Pranzo di Babette,” the 1987 film written and directed by Gabriel Axel, will be shown. On Saturday, October 27, at 17:30, a presentation of Roberto Carlo Petrini’s book, “San Milano: Culto e Iconografis del Patrono di Trevi,” will be lead by Professor Fabio Marcelli of the University of Perugia. Following the discussion, a medieval scene will be recreated in Centro Storico at 18:30.
The closing day of the month-long culture and arts festival will be filled with flavor. From 9-20:00, “” (a market of chestnut and ancient flavors) will be open in Piazza Mazzini. Also open for the duration of the day will be an antique flea market and a farmer’s market in Centro Storico. At 17:00, be sure not to miss another scene from medieval life followed by the closing of the Tavern Terzieri at midnight.
